I did a bunch of these proof of concept images for “Turbo” when trying to come up with a lighting look for the movie.I took our modeled characters and put them in Tony Scott movies. It was a really helpful and fun exercise to see if our pushed character designs could live in a gritty realistic world. This was a frame from “Unstoppable” but most of the movies I referenced were from the 80’s like “Top Gun” and “Days of Thunder”. Tony Scott visited the studio just a few months before he died and I was able to show him the images. He got a kick out of it.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 (Art Auction)
(2014) Acrylic
"The Second Cargo"
This was a painting done for an art auction that Dreamworks put on for Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles using HTTYD 2 as a theme.I borrowed some Nico Marlet character designs and an NC Wyeth compositon for the idea. It had been a while since I used my Cel-Vinyl paints but I was able to salvage them, the painting is 8” by 6”. All of the traditional paintings shown on this site are done using Cel-Vinyl which is an Acryilc paint.

THE ROAD TO EL DORADO
(1998) Acrylic
Dreamworks Animation
Production background painting for El Dorado. We had started using Photoshop on this movie, usually just to be able to paint overlays on board instead of cel.We then would scan the painted overlay(sometimes multiple overlays) and the background, separate it out from the board and assemble it with the background in the computer using Photoshop. This painting was actually all traditional and did not have an overlay.

SINBAD

Visual development for Sinbad. I painted this mostly traditionally using Cel-Vinyl with a little Photoshop to finish it. I think this is another Seth Engstrom layout. This was the last movie at Dreamworks with traditional background paintings.

THE ROAD TO EL DORADO
(1997) Acrylic/Photoshop
Dreamworks Animation
This was the very first painting I did for Dreamworks Animation, it was also my first time using Photoshop combined with traditional painting. Most of the painting is acrylic, the only digital parts are the brown stains from the windows. Back then we were using Macs but switched to HP’s a few years later, however I still use a Mac at home.I am pretty sure the layout was done by Seth Engstrom.

MONSTERS VS ALIENS

I did theses character paintings over Craig Kellman drawings for early development on MVA. We went through many changes on who our main character was. Rex Havoc was an early title and the lead character, then Creature Feature and finally Monsters vs Aliens.
